If you have installed simpleContact on your personal computer (e.g. for testing), you may get this message:

"An error occurred when connecting to the database. Please check that you have configured and installed this system correctly."

A likely cause is that "localhost" is not recognised as the address for your MySQL server. If this occurs, open sc_config.php and try setting the $server variable to "127.0.0.1". It should now connect successfully.

This is a well known MySQL issue, not a particular fault of simpleContact.

Please note: You should restore the $server variable to "localhost" (or the specific address of your database server) before uploading it to your website.

Thanks for this :)

SPF is a security measure designed to help prevent spammers sending email from forged addresses. It works by adding a record to your DNS, stating that a server is allowed to send email for that domain.

For example, Campaign Monitor recommend that you set up SPF for their server before you send a mailshot. It can be the difference between an email arriving or being deleted by the ISP before it even reaches the user's inbox.

A good host will often provide an interface for this, or sort it out for you on request.

Propagation of changes to your DNS can take anything from a few hours to days.

In case anyone else runs into this: I installed SimpleContact on a windows h-sphere server where smtp authentication was required. We discovered that I had to enable SPF ("Sender Policy Framework") and choose pass, for the emails to go out. I was getting the auto response emails, but not the ones with the actual visitor info until this setting was changed. It took a while for this SPF enabled setting to work.

simpleContact's requirements are deliberately modest. You need a web server with PHP support and access to a MySQL database.

MySQL 4.1 is strongly recommended because of its support for varying character sets and collations (which aids internationalisation). Although earlier versions may work, version 4.0 is the oldest version that I actively support.

A definitive minimum spec for PHP is a work-in-progress. PHP 4 and above are recommended.

The built-in update check requires either fopen or cURL.

The "remember me" checkbox at login uses a cookie.

I have written a blog post that gives a step-by-step guide to setting up a development server on a mac. This would be especially useful to a web developer with a laptop who wants to work and present while on the move.
